The Hunt for Red October is a 1990 American Cold War submarine thriller, starring Sean Connery as Captain First Rank Marko Ramius of the Soviet Navy and Alec Baldwin as Dr. Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst. The Soviet Navy have created a new engine system for their latest missile submarine, the Red October, which would allow her to sneak right up to the American coast and launch a devastating and decisive first strike without being noticed. THe Americans have learned of this and are, naturally, extremely worried, especially when satellite imagery reveals she put to sea ahead of schedule.
However, Captain Ramius has no intentions of launching World War Three. Because of some long-held grudges about the Soviet system, he and his officers have decided to defect to the United States and plan to bring the Red October with them. Jack Ryan has correctly surmised his intention, but has trouble convincing the military that he is right. Eventually Ryan has no choice but to join the USS Dallas, which is tracking Red October and prevent Commander Mancuso from firing on the Russians before engineering the Russian’s defection while preserving the illusion that the missile boat was sunk.
The film is a masterpiece of Cold War submarine action, hardly surprising since it is based on Tom Clancy’s debut novel of the same name. The film was a commercial and critical success, earning three Oscars nominations and winning one, for Best Sound Editing. The film began a series of five films based on Clancy’s novels featuring Jack Ryan, although they would stray further and further from the books as the series progressed.
