Starship Troopers, a 1997 science fiction/action/parody, was directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier. It is (incredibly loosely) based on the Robert Heinlein novel of the same name, but do not expect serious depictions of the book’s contents. In the future, Earth has become a space-faring Federation. However, after “the social scientists brought the world to the brink of chaos” the military veterans stepped in, seized control and created a new system, where only veterans of “Federal Service” coudl be Citizens, all others are mere Civilians. At high school in Buenos Aires, Johnny Rico, his girlfriend Carmen Ibanez and his best friend Carl Jenkins all decide to undertake Federal Service: Carmen becomes a starship pilot, the psychically-gifted Carl joins Military Intelligence whilst Johnny, having flunked most of his exams, signs up with the Mobile Infantry, the “meat grinder.”

Basic training is hard for Rico, not least because another old friend, Dizzy Flores has followed him because she loves him (he doesn’t reciprocate). After a live-fire training excersises gets one of Rico’s squad killed, he is demoted, flogged and resigns from his career. He is the middle of calling his parents to explain when the call is cut off: Man’s enemies, the Arachnids, have fired an asteroid at Earth, destroying Buenos Aires and killing millions, including Rico’s parents. He withdraws his resignation and joins the assault fleet heading to the bBug’s homeworld of Klendathu.

The Mobile Infantry’s landings on “Big K” are a disaster, with 100,000 dead in an hour. Rico is wounded, and he and two of his former squadmates are transferred to the Roughnecks, a unit of grizzled veterans. They are sent o rescue a group of soldiers on Planet P, but it is an ambush and the squads leader, Rico’s former teacher is mortally wounded, as is Dizzy. At the fineral, Carl appears, promoting Rico to Lieutenant and giving him command of the Roughnecks, ordering him back to the planet to capture a “brain bug.” The battle is difficult, Carmen’s ship si hit by enemy fire and she is among the few survivors, crash-landing in the bug complex near Rico and the Brain Bug, which interrogates Carmen and her fellow survivor. Rico arrives in time to save Carmen and they escape, to find that another squad has captured the Brain Bug. Carl establishes that it’s afraid and tells them that Man will soon be victorious now that they know how the Bugs think.

The film is a cunning satire on American culture that could descend into fascism, disguised as a mindless science-fiction action flick. It has received many mixed reviews, but overall it is an entertaining and exciting film.
