Star Trek II was the film that proved that Star Trek could work on the big screen. After the critical failure of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Gene Rodenberry was removed from direct control, so Producer Harve Bennet and Director Nicholas Meyer stepped up and produced the scripts themselves. Meyer famously wrote the final draft in just twelve days, an impressive feat. The film returns to the swashbuckling style of the original series, and in particular to one of it’s more memorable villains: Khan. A genetically engineered superman from the late 20th century, he had escaped reprisals on EArth aboard a sleeper ship with 80 of his followers. The ship, Botany Bay, was found adrift by Kirk and the Enterprise. Khan attempted to seize control of the ship but failed, being exiled to an uninhabited planet as punishment.
Now, fifteen years later, the starship Reliant stumbles across Khan while surveying planets for a test site for a new technology, the Genesis Device. Khan, consumed with desire for revenge against Kirk, captures Reliant, discards the crew and sets off to gain his revenge. He ambushes Kirk and causes substantial damage, forcing Kirk into a deadly game of cat and mouse in the Muara Nebula, where only Kirk’s greater experience will help him prevail.
The film is credited with revitalising the Star Trek franchise and, at the time, set a world record for box office returns. The film started a story arc that continued in it’s two sequels, The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home. It is widely considered the finest of the Star Trek films and ensured that the short lived 1960’s series would have lasting legacy.
