Meet Indiana Jones, one of cinema’s more unlikely heroes. He has no special powers and his day job is the yawn-inducing role of Archeology Professor. But he does have a few things on his side. One, he’s played by Harrison Ford. Two, he has a hat, a whip and a gun and knows how to use all three. Finally, he debuted in Raiders of the Lost Ark, an amazingly awesome film that sends Jones on a hunt for the ancient Ark of the Covenant. The hunt becomes a race when cinema’s favorite bad guys, the Nazis, get their hands on it first.

With a stellar performance by Ford and an outstanding supporting cast, Raiders of the Lost Ark takes the audience on a whirlwind adventure, with the Nazis being an ever-present threat and the titular Lost Ark being a surprisingly distinctive presence for an inanimate object. The film’s charm lies in it’s characters and it’s humour; whilst it is not afraid to be gritty and serious in places, it is equally unafraid to have characters who act like real people, complete with poorly-timed jokes and nervous laughs at times. The film stands up as a genuine classic if adventure cinema and is still widely popular today.

The score for Raiders of the Lost Ark is another John Williams classc, instantly recognizable from the first few notes. It’s bold and simple melody proclaims that Jones is indeed a bona fide action hero, and plays prominently in his more daring scenes. But the main theme is just a small part of the larger score; there is alos Marion’s theme, a softer, more loving melody that plays in her scenes and signifies the feelings she and Jones have for each other. Finally there is the Ark Theme, a haunting and apocalyptic piece that indicates the untapped, awesome power that the Ark contains, and it’s unwillingness to be used as a pawn by the forces of darkness.
