Meet Indiana Jones, one of cinema’s more unlikely heroes. He has no special powers and his day job is the yawn-inducing role of Archeology Professor. But he does have a few things on his side. One, he’s played by Harrison Ford. Two, he has a hat, a whip and a gun and knows how to use all three. Finally, he debuted in Raiders of the Lost Ark, an amazingly awesome film that sends Jones on a hunt for the ancient Ark of the Covenant. The hunt becomes a race when cinema’s favorite bad guys, the Nazis, get their hands on it first.
With a stellar performance by Ford and an outstanding supporting cast, Raiders of the Lost Ark takes the audience on a whirlwind adventure, with the Nazis being an ever-present threat and the titular Lost Ark being a surprisingly distinctive presence for an inanimate object. The film’s charm lies in it’s characters and it’s humour; whilst it is not afraid to be gritty and serious in places, it is equally unafraid to have characters who act like real people, complete with poorly-timed jokes and nervous laughs at times. The film stands up as a genuine classic if adventure cinema and is still widely popular today.
