Pirates of the Caribbean is a Walt Disney film franchise that currently comprises four films with a fifth in the works. The first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl, tells the tale of a humble blacksmith, Will Turner (played by Orlando Bloom), who has ambitions to marry the governor’s daughter, Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), who saved him from a shipwreck eight years before. However, she also found a golden medallion which draws the immortal pirates of the Black Pearl to Port Royal, who capture Elizabeth. Will has to break captured pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) out of prison to save Elizabeth. They commandeer a British frigate, HMS Interceptor and recruit a crew to pursue the Pearl.
The film was a smash hit (despite being predicted to flop) and spawned two back-to-back sequels: Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End. In 2011, a fourth film, On Stranger Tides, was released, and a fifth, Dead Men Tell No Tales, is slated to begin production in October 2014 for release in 2016. The film was won nominated for four Oscars and won a host of other awards and is fondly remembered as a film that revitalized the previously stale pirate genre.
