Byker Grove was a British television series that spawned between 1989 and 2006, so a healthy 17 year run. The shows creator was Adele Rose who has also worked on Coronation Street as a scrip writer and has written around 450 scripts for the long running soap opera series. Byker Grove aired BBC at 5:10pm after Newsround but later got moved the the prime time slot of 5:00pm. Although this was in essence a children’s TV series it was targeted at mid to late teenagers and young adults this incorporating some controversial storyline’s.

In the 17 years of Byker Grove the show was set in Byker itself, a district of Newcastle Upon Tyne. The show therefore was centred around the transition between childhood and adulthood and most of the scenes were taking place in the Byker Grove youth club. As mentioned Byker Grove tackled some controversial storyline’s such as drug addiction, child abuse, homelessness, teen pregnancy and abortion. Byker Grove was also the first British drama to ever broach the subject of ‘coming out’ as two male characters kissed at the back of a cinema, this causing controversy among the viewers and general British Public.

Byker Grove of course is now very notable for launching the careers of Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly who’s characters were PJ and Duncan, these two now globally famous as the double act we know and love Ant & Dec. During their time as PJ & Duncan they released a few songs and tried breaking the music industry, however the failed but their most famous song was ‘Let’s get ready to rumble’. However since their days in Byker Grove they have performed this song live on their Saturday night show ‘Saturday Night Takeaway’
